The Public Works Department (PWD), Tamil Nadu has released a notification inviting online applications for engagement of Apprentices for the year 2026-27 under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Act 1973. A total of 760 apprentice training places are available across Graduate Engineering, Diploma (Technician), and Non-Engineering Graduate categories. Eligible candidates from Tamil Nadu who passed in 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025 can apply through the NATS portal from 20 May 2026 to 25 June 2026.

TN PWD Apprentice Eligibility Criteria 2026

Category I – Graduate Apprentices

  • A regular full-time Degree in Engineering or Technology from a Statutory University in the relevant discipline.
  • A regular full-time Degree in Engineering or Technology from an institution empowered by an Act of Parliament.
  • An equivalent Graduate-level qualification from a professional body recognized by the State or Central Government.

Category II – Technician (Diploma) Apprentices

  • A regular full-time Diploma in Engineering or Technology from a State Council/Board of Technical Education.
  • A regular full-time Diploma in Engineering or Technology from a University in the relevant discipline.
  • An equivalent Diploma recognized by the State or Central Government.

Category III – Non-Engineering Graduate Apprentices

  • A regular full-time UGC-approved Degree in Arts/Science/Commerce/Humanities (BA/B.Sc./B.Com/BBA/BBM/BCA etc.) from a Statutory or Deemed University.

Passing Years Eligible

Candidates who completed their qualifying examination in 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025 are eligible to apply.

Primary & Secondary Schooling (K-12)

Domicile

Candidates must hail from Tamil Nadu.

Age Limit

Age limit will be followed as per the Apprenticeship Rules.

Previous Training/Experience

Candidates who have already undergone, or are currently undergoing, apprenticeship under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Act 1973, or who have one year or more of work experience, are not eligible to apply.

TN PWD Apprentice Selection Process 2026

The Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region) will prepare the shortlist based on the percentage of marks obtained in the basic qualifying examination relevant to each discipline. The selection process involves:

  • Shortlisting based on academic percentage/CGPA
  • Email intimation to shortlisted candidates
  • Certificate verification at PWD, Chennai

Candidates must compulsorily enter their percentage of marks (or CGPA x 10) on the NATS portal; applications without this detail will not be considered.

Reservation Policy

Reservation under SC/ST/OBC/PwD categories will be applicable as per Apprentices Act guidelines. Candidates claiming reservation must submit certificates in the prescribed Government format; otherwise, their claim will be treated as General category. BC/MBC candidates claiming OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) status must submit an OBC (NCL) certificate in the approved format.
